Description

The bougainvillea originates from South America, but is now grown in almost all warm climates. Under optimal conditions, the plant can reach a height of up to 15 metres, but in Central and Northern Europe it rarely grows taller than 3-5 metres. The growth of the plant can reach up to 2 metres per year.

More than 10 varieties in many different colours are known. The most common colours on sale are purple, pink and white. Once the plant is established, it flowers almost all year round in warm regions, whereas in colder regions it only flowers from spring to autumn. In winter, it also loses most of its leaves there.

Bougainvillea loves the sun and is very sensitive to frost, so in cooler regions it should be moved to a frost-proof place during the winter. The plant can be pruned back very well and is therefore also very popular as a bonsai. To grow luxuriantly and show its full flowering splendour, it needs 5-8 hours of sun daily. If it is kept in the shade, hardly any flowers will appear. The leaves of the plant are somewhat sensitive to strong winds, so it should also be given a relatively wind-protected location if possible.
